While Shirounoya Onsen Yupika is in fact an onsen, meaning the water comes from a natural hot spring, it is mainly used by the people living around the onsen to wash themselves clean on a regular basis. In that sense it has all characteristics of a public bath, rather than a resort.

This onsen opened only a few years ago so the building is still new and well maintained. The large lobby contains an area with shoe lockers and a souvenir shop as well as the front desk. The segregation between male and female starts at the front desk where both sexes have their own counter. The entrance to the locker rooms is down a nice looking corridor. The locker room is smaller than I would have expected, considering how busy it is. The same goes for the bathing area too. Or at least is looks smaller than expected because of the design. When entering the bathing area the washing faucets are first. The washing area is separated from the baths via a corridor. The main warm water bath, at the other end of this corridor, is called the “dome-bath” because it’s roof has the design of a dome. The water tastes salty. Outside are a jacuzzi, a jet bath and two warm baths of different depth. On the other end of the garden-set outside bath is the entrance to the steam sauna. The dry sauna is located in the corridor connecting the washing area with the dome-bath.

Visiting Shirounoya Onsen Yupika was an enjoyable experience. The onsen is located at a 10-15 minute walk from Ichiba station on the JR Kakogawa line. Driving is also an option, with enough parking space around the building.
