After walking past this medium-sized sento hidden in a small side street of Teramachi in the heart of Kyoto I decided to take a peek inside and have a dip in the process, and I am not disappointed. On the contrary.
Sakurayu is a (based only on my own guesswork) one of the last sentŠbuilt in strict traditional style not long after the war. I think so because the building itself doesn’t look more than 50 years old, but the setup is quite traditional, complete with a Japanese landscape painting on the back wall.
After walking through the entrance door you’ll find yourself immediately in the changing room, so make sure to walk in the right door (not the one of the opposite sex). Inside the attendant sits in the traditional bandai. The changing room is quite large and the floor is (untraditionally) covered with laminate instead of tatami. That however is the only thing I have been able to pick up that diverts from ‘official’ sentŠtradition. The bathing area is set up with the faucets in the front and one side of the room and two hot baths on the other side. In the back wall, in between those two Japanese landscapes is a small door that leads to the sauna. Behind a hole in the sidewall is one cold bath, which is an absolute heaven to sit in after ten minutes in the sauna. That hole in the wall is quite low, and I did hit my head, so be careful.
Sakurayu is located right off Teramachi and about a ten minute walk from either Hankyu Kawaramachi station, Sanjo/Sanjo-Keihan station or Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae station. The entrance fee is 390 yen for the bath and an extra 30 yen for the sauna. Soap and towels are available for rent at 40 and 30 yen respectively.
