Within five minutes from Kusatsu station we find the basic, traditional sentō Sakurayu. Located along one of the larger wider street in the neighbourhood the front of the building is decorated with a small light-up ゆ (yu) sign, in a traditional red on white. Inside the elder lady manning the bandai has friendly smiles for all customers walking in.

The bath itself is as basic as it gets. The bathing area houses only two baths, both hot, one with bubbles. The faucets line one of the walls, and the two baths line the opposite wall. For a bath loving foreigner there is not too much of interest in Sakurayu, since it’s main and seemingly only function is a washing facility. There are no extra’s that make coming to this bath a relaxing experience, especially with Kusatsu Onsen right around the corner.

The entrance fee is the customary 380 yen, with towels for rent for a small fee. Soap and shampoo can be purchased in small quantities, enough for a generous one time use, as well as razors.
